孔子作《春秋》，上揆之天道，下質諸人情，參之於古，考之於今。 Confucius wrote the Spring and Autumn Annals with one eye on Heaven’s pattern, one on human passion, checked against old ages and today.

故孔子曰：「天地之性人為貴。」 Confucius said, “Of all nature between Heaven and earth, none is nobler than man.”

故孔子曰「不知命，亡以為君子」，此之謂也。 Hence Confucius said, “Without knowing Heaven’s charge, one cannot be a gentleman”—he meant this ladder of self-cultivation.
