時有大心暠法師著無諍論以詆之，縡乃為明道論，用釋其難。 At that time the monk Daxin Hao wrote the Treatise on Non-Contention to attack him; Zai answered with the Treatise on Illuminating the Way to resolve the objections.

法師何獨蔽護不聽毀乎？ Why does the master alone shield and forbid destruction?

法師又言：「吾願息諍以通道，讓勝以忘德。」 The master also said, "I wish to rest contention to open the Way and yield victory to forget virtue."
