十二年，與法使狄隆等論界線，以緣邊二千餘裡，議分五段，執志乘與爭，更正沒入越地三十餘裡，險要地四十里，復大賭咒河外苗塘子諸地數百里。 In Guangxu 12 he negotiated boundaries with the French envoy Dillon and others along more than two thousand li, divided discussion into five sections, cited gazetteers, recovered more than thirty li wrongly lost to Vietnam, forty li of strategic ground, and hundreds of li beyond the Dazhuzhou River including Miaotangzi.

十二年，法人別遣狄隆、狄塞爾來會。 In the twelfth year the French separately sent Dillon and Descours to meet.

狄使懼，又恥而諱其事，堅請按圖畫界，朝旨報可。 The envoys were frightened and, ashamed of the incident, concealed it; they pressed for demarcation by map, and the court agreed.

承修指圖籍抗爭，狄使不能屈，欲分白龍尾半之左歸我而右歸越。 Chengxiu cited maps and records and held firm; unable to prevail, the envoys proposed splitting Bailongwei, the left half to China and the right to Vietnam.

議久之，暫與定約三條，猶未決，而狄使竟以兵力驅江平、黃竹居民內徙。 Talks dragged on until three provisional articles were agreed, but before matters were settled the envoys used troops to drive the people of Jiangping and Huangzhu inland.
