高宗謀廢鬱林，以告孝嗣，孝嗣奉旨無所釐贊。 Emperor Gao plotted to depose Emperor Yulin and informed Xiaosi; Xiaosi received the command without raising any objection.

高宗入殿，孝嗣戎服隨後。 Emperor Gao entered the hall and Xiaosi followed in military dress.

鬱林旣死，高宗須太后令，孝嗣於袖中出而奏之，高宗大悅。 After Yulin was dead, Emperor Gao needed the empress dowager's order; Xiaosi produced it from his sleeve and presented it, and Emperor Gao was greatly pleased.

明帝卽位，加侍中、中軍大將軍，定策勳，進爵爲公，增封二千戶。 When Emperor Ming took the throne he was additionally made Palace Attendant and Grand General of the Central Army; for his merit in settling the succession he was advanced in rank to duke with two thousand added households in his fief.

時帝已寢疾，兵事未已，竟不施行。 The emperor was already gravely ill and military affairs had not ceased; in the end the plan was not carried out.

帝疾甚，孝嗣入居禁中，臨崩受遺託重，申開府之命。 When the emperor's illness grew severe, Xiaosi moved into the inner palace; at the verge of death he received a weighty deathbed trust and again pressed the order appointing him Minister of Works with Grand Marshal protocol.
