八年，帝自遼東還都，衡妾言衡怨望，謗訕朝政，竟賜盡於家。 In the eighth year the emperor returned from Liaodong to the capital. Heng's concubine reported that he harbored resentment and slandered court policy. He was ultimately granted death at home.

煬帝即位，守大理卿。 When Emperor Yang succeeded, he served as acting grand master for law.

汪視事二日，帝將親省囚徒。 Wang had been in office two days when the emperor was about to personally inspect the prisoners.

其時系囚二百餘人，汪通宵究審，詰朝而奏，曲盡事情，一無遺誤，帝甚嘉之。 At that time over two hundred prisoners were in custody. Wang examined them all night and by morning presented his report, fully covering the circumstances without a single omission or error. The emperor greatly commended him.

帝令百僚就學，與汪講論，天下通儒碩學多萃焉，論難鋒起，皆不能屈。 The emperor ordered the hundred officials to come study and debate with Wang. Eminent scholars throughout the realm gathered. Debate flared sharp, and none could bend him.

帝令御史書其問答奏之，省而大悅，賜良馬一匹。 The emperor ordered the censorate to write down their questions and answers and present them. He read them and was greatly pleased, granting one fine horse.

既而留守樊子蓋斬弘策，以狀奏汪，帝疑之，出為梁郡通守。 Soon garrison commander Fan Zigai executed Hongce and memorialized Wang's situation. The emperor suspected him and sent him out as administrator of Liang commandery.

煬帝崩，王世充推越王侗為主，征拜吏部尚書，頗見親委。 When Emperor Yang died, Wang Shichong installed Prince Tong of Yue as ruler and summoned Wang as minister of personnel. He was greatly trusted and relied upon.
