房暠，京兆長安人也。 Fang Gao was a native of Chang'an in Jingzhao.

天成中，唐末帝出鎮河中，暠於路左迎謁，求事軍門，末帝愛之，使治賓客。 During Tiancheng, when the Last Emperor of Tang went out to govern Hezhong, Gao met him at the roadside and sought service at headquarters. The Last Emperor took a liking to him and put him in charge of guests.

及末帝登極，歷南北院宣徽使，尋與趙延壽同為樞密使。 When the Last Emperor ascended the throne, Gao served successively as commissioner of the southern and northern palace secretariat bureaus, and soon shared the post of confidential commissioner with Zhao Yanshou.

時薛文遇、劉延朗之徒居中用事，暠雖處密地，其聽用之言，十不得三四，但隨勢可否，不為事先。 At that time Xue Wenyü, Liu Yanlang, and their like held sway at court. Though Gao sat in the innermost councils, only three or four of every ten words he spoke were heeded; he merely assented or demurred as the tide flowed, never taking the lead.

每朝廷有大事，暠與端明學士等環坐會議，多於眾中俯首而睡，其避事也如此。 Whenever the court faced a great matter, Gao would sit in conference with the academicians of the Hall of Bright Clarity and the like, and often slept with bowed head among the assembly—such was his way of avoiding responsibility.

高祖即位，以暠濡足閏朝，不專與奪，故特恩原之，命為左驍衛大將軍，留西京。 When Gaozu took the throne, since Gao had served under two dynasties and had not monopolized decisions on life and death, he was specially shown grace and pardoned, appointed grand general of the Left Valiant Guards, and kept at the western capital.

初，廢帝起於鳳翔，與共事者五人：節度判官韓昭胤，掌書記李專美，牙將宋審虔，客將房暠，而延朗為孔目官。 When the Deposed Emperor first rose at Fengxiang, five men shared his cause: Han Zhaoyin as military aide, Li Zhuanmei as chief clerk, Song Shenqian as guard officer, Fang Hao as guest officer, and Yanlang as records clerk.

而暠又喜鬼神巫祝之說，有瞽者張濛，自言事太白山神，神，魏崔浩也，其言吉凶無不中，暠素信之。 Hao also favored spirit worship. A blind man named Zhang Meng claimed to serve the god of Mount Taibai—said to be Cui Hao of Wei—and his omens never failed. Hao trusted him deeply.

暠使濛問於神，神傳語曰：「三珠並一珠，驢馬沒人驅。歲月甲庚午，中興戊己土。」 Hao had Meng ask the god, who answered: “Three pearls join into one; donkeys and horses sink while men drive on. In the year’s months, jia and gengwu; at Zhongxing, wu and jitu.”

暠不曉其義，使問濛，濛曰：「神言如此，我能傳之，不能解也。」 Hao could not grasp the meaning and asked Meng, who said: “The god spoke thus—I can relay it, but not explain it.”

帝將反，而兵少，又乏食，由此甚懼，使暠問濛，濛傳神語曰：「王當有天下，可無憂！」 About to rebel but short of troops and food, the emperor was terrified and had Hao consult Meng, who relayed: “My lord shall rule the realm—fear nothing!”

王思同率諸鎮兵圍鳳翔，廢帝懼，又遣暠問神，神曰：「王兵少，東兵來，所以迎王也。」 Wang Sitong besieged Fengxiang with provincial troops. The Deposed Emperor, afraid, again consulted the god through Hao, who answered: “Your troops are few—the eastern army comes to welcome you.”

帝回顧暠曰：「張濛神言，豈不驗哉！」 The emperor turned to Hao and said: “Zhang Meng’s oracle—was it not fulfilled!”

由是暠益見親信，而專以巫祝用事。 Hao grew still more trusted, and shamanic rites alone governed affairs.

帝既立，以昭胤為左諫議大夫、端明殿學士，專美為比部郎中、樞密院直學士，審虔為皇城使，暠為宣徽北院使，延朗為莊宅使。 Once enthroned, the emperor made Zhaoyin Left Remonstrator and Duanming academician; Zhuanmei director of the Bureau of Revenue and direct academician of Military Affairs; Shenqian commissioner of the Imperial City; Hao commissioner of the Northern Palace Secretariat; and Yanlang commissioner of the Imperial Estates.

久之，昭胤、暠為樞密使，延朗為副使，審虔為侍衛步軍都指揮使，而薛文遇亦為職方郎中、樞密院直學士。 In time Zhaoyin and Hao became chief councillors, Yanlang deputy, Shenqian commander of the palace foot guards, and Xue Wenyu director of Appointments and direct academician of Military Affairs.

由是審虔將兵，專美、文遇主謀議，而昭胤、暠及延朗掌機密。 Shenqian held the armies; Zhuanmei and Wenyu shaped policy; Zhaoyin, Hao, and Yanlang held the confidential seals.
