后陵遲以至于始皇，天下并爭於戰國，懦術既絀焉，然齊魯之閒，學者獨不廢也。 In the gradual decline that followed, down to the time of the First Emperor, the realm was consumed by the rivalries of the Warring States, and Confucian learning was cast aside. Yet in the lands between Qi and Lu, scholars alone kept the tradition alive.
