善為笑言，然合於大道，秦始皇時，置酒而天雨，陛楯者皆沾寒。 He was a master of witty remarks, yet his jests always struck at the greater truth. During the reign of the First Emperor, a banquet was being held when rain began to fall, and the guards standing watch on the palace steps were soaked through and shivering.

於是始皇使陛楯者得半相代。 At this, the First Emperor ordered that the guards be allowed to take turns, half on duty and half resting.
