五年，赴湖北剿教匪，為領隊大臣，數敗高天升、馬學禮於川、楚交界，授宜昌鎮總兵。 In the fifth year (1800) he went to Hubei to suppress the White Lotus rebels, served as expeditionary commissioner, repeatedly defeated Gao Tiansheng and Ma Xueli along the Sichuan-Hubei border, and was made commander of the Yichang garrison.
