Baotai rose from baitangga to Chahar commander-in-chief and served as Tibet commissioner alongside Yamantai. When Gorkha invaded Tibet, Baotai was punished for urging the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Erdeni to flee and for concealing tribute sent before hostilities and requests brought by envoys without reporting them to the throne. The emperor changed his name to Fuxihun; he and Yamantai were stripped of office, made to wear the cangue, and Baotai was flogged four times in all.
