論曰：高宗英毅，大臣有過失，不稍假借。 The commentators say: Gaozong was resolute and stern. When ministers had faults he showed no leniency.

和珅繼用事，值高宗倦勤，怙寵貪恣，卒以是敗。 He Shen succeeded in wielding power when Gaozong grew weary of governing. Relying on favor he was greedy and wanton, and in the end failed because of this.
