高祖入關，召補大丞相府司錄參軍。 When Gaozu entered the passes, Wei was summoned to serve as registrar on the grand chancellor's staff.

帝語裴寂曰：「威，今之叔孫通也。」 The emperor told Pei Ji, "Wei is today's Shusun Tong."

每論政事得失，必陳古為諭，帝益親矚，嘗引入臥內，謂曰：「昔周有八柱國，吾與公家是也。 Whenever policy was debated he cited antiquity as instruction; the emperor grew still closer, once brought him into his private quarters, and said, "In antiquity Zhou had eight pillars of state — your house and mine were among them.

今我為天子，而公為內史令，事固有不等耶？」 Now I am emperor and you are director of the palace secretariat — surely our stations cannot be equal?"

今陛下龍興，臣復以姻戚進，夙夜懼不克任。」 Now Your Majesty has risen, and I have again advanced through marriage ties — morning and night I fear I am not equal to the charge."

後寢疾，帝臨問，及卒，哭之慟。 When he fell ill the emperor visited his bedside; at his death the emperor wept bitterly.

高祖起兵，軌募眾千餘人迎謁長春宮。 When Gaozu rebelled, Gui raised over a thousand men and went to Changchun Palace to join him.

帝大悅，賜良馬十匹，使略地渭南，下永豐倉，收兵五千，從平京師。 The emperor was delighted, gave him ten fine horses, and sent him to seize territory in Weinan, capture Yongfeng Granary, raise five thousand troops, and help take the capital.

後入朝，賜坐禦樓，容不肅，又坐對詔，帝怒曰：「公入蜀，車騎、驃騎從者二十人，公斬誅略盡，我隴種車騎，尚不足給公。」 Later, summoned to court, he was granted a seat in the imperial tower but sat without proper decorum; when again seated to receive an imperial message, the emperor in anger said, "When you went to Shu you all but wiped out the twenty mounted guards I gave you — my own cavalry of Long stock would scarcely be enough for you."
