劉穆之舉為高祖鎮軍參軍，庫部郎，永世令。 Liu Muzhi recommended him as military aide on Gaozu's Pacification Army staff, as Director of the Storehouses, and as Magistrate of Yongshi.

復為高祖太尉參軍，轉主簿，丹陽丞。 He again served as military aide on Gaozu's Grand Commandant staff, then became chief clerk and Assistant in Danyang.
