蓋炎帝之裔曰葛烏菟者，世雄朔陲，後為冒頓可汗所襲，保鮮卑山以居，號鮮卑氏。 A scion of the Flame Emperor named Gewu-tu had long dominated the northern marches; Modun, the Xiongnu chanyu, later overran him, and his people sheltered on the Xianbei Mountains and took the name Xianbei.

鮮卑葛烏菟之後曰普回。普回有子莫那，自陰山南徙，始居遼西。九世為慕容晃所滅，為慕容晃所滅據晉書一０九前燕載記，「晃」應作皝。鮮卑眾散為宇文氏，或為庫莫奚，或為契丹。 Among the Xianbei of Gewu-tu's line was Puhui. His son Mona migrated from south of the Yin Mountains and first settled in Liaoxi. Nine generations later the line was destroyed by Murong Huang — the phrase is duplicated, and Jin Shu 109, Former Yan Annals, shows that the second character of his name should use the rare personal-name graph rather than the common graph for "bright". The Xianbei then split into the Yuwen, Kumoxi, and Khitan peoples.
