家貧落魄，聞同里宮國勳知亳州，往依為奴。 Born poor and down on his luck, he learned that a townsman named Gong Guoxun had become magistrate of Bozhou and went to serve him as a household retainer.

國勳壯其志，署為州練長。 Guoxun was impressed by his spirit and named him head of the prefectural training corps.
