林宗見而問其意。 Guo Tai asked why he had not stopped.

林宗以此異之，因勸令遊學。 Guo Tai marked him as exceptional and urged him to study abroad.

林宗見而拔之，勸遊學官，遂爲諸生傭。 Guo Tai noticed him, urged him into the Imperial Academy, and he paid his way by working for fellow students.

林宗乃訓之義方，懼以禍敗。 Guo Tai taught him the right way and warned him where violence would end.

賈淑字子厚，林宗鄉人也。 Jia Shu, courtesy name Zihou, came from Guo Tai's home district.

泰與語，淑懇惻流涕。 Guo Tai spoke with him until Jia Shu wept with remorse.

泰詣縣令應操，陳其報怨蹈義之士。 Guo Tai went to Magistrate Ying Cao and argued that Jia had acted from righteous duty in a blood feud.

林宗遭母憂，淑來修弔，旣而鉅鹿孫威直亦至。 When Guo Tai mourned his mother, Jia Shu came to offer condolences—soon joined by Sun Weizhi from Julu.

威直以林宗賢而受惡人弔，心怪之，不進而去。 Sun took offense that so worthy a man would admit a known villain; he turned on his heel without entering.

林宗追而謝之曰：「賈子厚誠實凶德，然洗心向善。 Guo Tai overtook him and explained: "Jia Shu has an ugly past, but he is trying to mend his ways.

林宗見而告人曰：「牆高基下，雖得必失。」 Guo Tai remarked to others: "Tall walls on shallow footings—whatever he wins now, he will lose."

林宗見而謂曰：「卿有絕人之才，足成偉器。 Guo Tai told him: "You have gifts few can match—you could be a man of consequence.

每共候林宗，未甞不連日達夜。 Their visits to Guo Tai routinely stretched from dawn past midnight.

林宗謂門人曰：「二子英才有餘，而並不入道，惜乎！」 Guo Tai told students: "Both men brim with brilliance, yet neither will commit to the true path—what a waste!"

王柔字叔優，弟澤，字季道，林宗同郡晉陽縣人也。 Wang Rou (courtesy Shuyou) and his brother Wang Ze (courtesy Jidao) were from Jinyang—Guo Tai's home commandery.

兄弟緫角共候林宗，以訪才行所宜。 Still in their youth they called on Guo Tai to learn where their talents pointed.

林宗曰：「叔優當以仕進顯，季道當以經術通，然違方改務，亦不能至也。」 Guo Tai said: "Rou will rise through public service, Ze through scholarship—stray from those paths and neither will fulfill his promise."
