度以韓弘領都統，乃上還招討以避弘，然實行都統事。 Since Han Hong held the title of overall commander, Du petitioned to surrender the recruitment commission to avoid clashing with him, yet in practice exercised overall command.

又制詔有異辭，欲激賊怒弘者，意弘怏怏則度無與共功。 A drafted edict also contained provocative wording meant to inflame the rebels against Han Hong, on the theory that if Hong were offended, Du would fight the war alone.
