四年，匪首何二久踞開州、尚大坪，擾近省州縣，無寧歲。 In 1865 the bandit chief He Erjiu held Kaizhou and Shangdaping and kept the neighboring prefectures in turmoil year after year.

進克濱江賊巢，斬馘二千餘，何二棄尚大坪而遁，被優敘，署安義鎮總兵。 He pushed on to storm the riverside rebel nest, killing more than two thousand; He Er abandoned Shangdaping and fled; Deguang was specially rewarded and appointed acting commander of the Anyi garrison.
