黃道賢，泉州人。 Huang Daoxian came from Quanzhou.

嫡母唐無子，道賢在襁褓而生母蘇以疾去。 His principal mother Lady Tang had no children of her own; while Daoxian was still an infant his birth mother Lady Su left home because of illness.

道賢竭力養二母，得其歡心。 Daoxian devoted himself to both mothers and won their affection.

父病篤，道賢晝夜奉湯藥，不離膝下，遍求良醫，莫效。 When his father fell gravely ill, Daoxian tended him day and night at his bedside and sought physicians everywhere, all to no avail.

道賢居喪盡禮，負土築墳，廬於墓側，疏食終制。 Daoxian observed every mourning rite, carried earth to raise the mound, lived in a hut beside the grave, and ate only plain food until mourning ended.
