歷戶部、吏部侍郎，留學政任，未滿，十九年，命偕侍郎黃爵滋視福建海防及禁煙事，連擢左都御史、兵部尚書。 He was vice minister of revenue and of personnel, kept the education post, and in 1839 was sent with Huang Juezi to inspect Fujian's coast and opium suppression, then promoted to left censor-in-chief and minister of war.
