Huang Yuan, governor of Hanjia, had fallen foul of Zhuge Liang; hearing Liu Bei was gravely ill, he feared what might follow, rebelled across the district, and burned Linqiong.
Zhuge Liang was then away east tending the emperor's illness; Chengdu lay nearly bare, and Yuan grew bolder.
Yang Hong immediately alerted the crown prince, sent his personal guard, and had Generals Chen Hu and Zheng Chuo attack Huang Yuan.
Most advisers thought that if Yuan could not take Chengdu he would head through Yuexi into the southern tribes.
Hong said: "Yuan is brutal by nature, with no other hold over men—how could he manage that?
Hu and Chuo followed Hong's plan and captured Yuan alive.
In Jianxing 1 (223) Yang Hong received a secondary marquisate, was restored as governor of Shu commandery and made general of loyal integrity, and later became colonel of the metropolitan cavalry while retaining the governorship.
