先是，高宗以宮人黃氏侍光宗於東宮，及即位爲貴妃，后李氏意不能平。 Earlier Gaozong had placed the palace lady Huang in Guangzong's household as heir. When he became emperor she was made honored consort, and Empress Li was deeply unsettled.

是年冬十一月郊，有司已戒而風雨暴至，光宗震懼，及齋宿青城，貴妃暴薨，駕還，聞之恚，是夕疾作。 That winter, as the suburban rites approached in the eleventh month, a sudden storm struck though the ritual officers had already proclaimed the fast. Guangzong was terrified. While he kept ritual seclusion at Qingcheng, the honored consort died suddenly. On his return he flew into a rage, and that night he fell ill.
