光緒十四年，舉鄉薦，會試不第，謁李鴻章於天津，鴻章，其父執也，語不合，投通永鎮總兵吳育仁幕下。 In the fourteenth year of Guangxu (1888) he passed the provincial examinations but failed at the capital; he called on Li Hongzhang at Tianjin—Hongzhang had been his father's friend—but they could not agree, and he joined the staff of Tongyong garrison commander Wu Yuren.
