先是，詔步軍都指揮使李繼勛營於壽州之南，攻賊壘。 Earlier Li Jixun, commander of the foot army, had been ordered to camp south of Shouzhou and assault the rebel works.

李繼勛喪失之後，軍無固誌，諸將議欲退軍，賴今上自六合領兵歸闕，過其城下，因為駐留旬日，王師復振。 After Jixun's defeat morale collapsed and officers talked of retreat. Zhao Kuangyin, returning from Liuhe, halted below the city for ten days and restored the army's spirit.
