勘官李誌寧疑其獄，夕具衣冠禱於天。 The investigating official Li Zhining doubted the case; that evening he dressed in full regalia and prayed to Heaven.

誌寧自念夢兆：“非殺人者袁姓乎？” Zhining reflected on the dream: "Is not the killer surnamed Yuan?"

有門卒忽言張氏饋食之夫曰袁大，明日袁至，使吏執之，曰：“殺人者汝也。” A gate guard suddenly said the man who brought food to the Zhang household was called Yuan the Elder. The next day Yuan arrived; Li had him seized and said: "You are the killer."
