用儀、景澄、昶及尚書立山、內閣學士聯元並言：「奸民不可縱，外为不可啟。」 Yongyi, Jingcheng, Chang, Minister Li Shan, and Hanlin Bachelor Lian Yuan jointly declared, "Riotous mobs must not be indulged, and foreign conflict must not be started."

遂與立山、聯元同棄市。 He was then publicly executed together with Li Shan and Lian Yuan.

聯元，字仙蘅，崔佳氏，滿洲鑲紅旗人。 Lian Yuan, courtesy name Xianheng, of the Cuijia clan, was a Manchu of the Bordered Red Banner.

汕頭者，通商要衢也，奸人倚英領事為民暴，聯元裁以法，良善獲安。 At Shantou, a vital treaty port, ruffians sheltered behind the British consul to prey on the people until Lian Yuan punished them by law and the law-abiding were safe.

聯元與崇綺爭論帝前，謂：「民氣可用，匪氣不可用。」 Before the emperor Lian Yuan argued with Chongqi: "Popular spirit may be used, but bandit spirit must not."

聯元謂：「甲午之役，一日本且不能勝，況八強國乎？ Lian Yuan said, "In the Sino-Japanese War we could not beat Japan alone—what chance against eight great powers?

昭雪後，予諡文直。 After rehabilitation he received the posthumous title Wenzhi, Cultured and Upright.

妻翁內閣學士聯元既以論拳匪誅，家屬匿其宅，眾以壽富重新學，亦指為袒外，恚甚，或勸之他往，曰：「吾宗親也，寧有去理耶？」 His father-in-law, Grand Secretariat academician Lian Yuan, had already been executed for criticizing the Boxers; Lian's family took refuge in Shou Fu's house. Because Shou Fu championed Western learning, the crowd accused him of siding with foreigners and grew furious. When some urged him to flee, he said: 'I am of the imperial clan—how could I leave?'
