劉玘 Liu Qi

劉玘，汴州雍丘人也，世為宣武軍牙將。 Liu Qi came from Yongqiu in Bianzhou; his family had served for generations as Xuanwu army guard officers.

梁太祖鎮宣武，玘以軍卒補隊長，稍以戰功遷牙將，為襄州都指揮使。 When Zhu Wen held Xuanwu, Qi entered as a rank soldier and became squad leader; battle by battle he rose to guard officer and overall commander of Xiangzhou.

山南節度使王班為亂軍所殺，亂軍推玘為留後，玘偽許之，明日饗士于庭，伏甲幕中，酒半，擒為亂者殺之。 Shannan governor Wang Ban fell to mutineers who wanted Qi as acting commissioner. Qi pretended yes; next day he feasted the men in the courtyard with armored troops hidden behind the screens, and at mid-feast seized and killed the ringleaders.

會梁遣陳暉兵亦至，襄州平，以功拜復州刺史，徙亳、安二州。 Chen Hui’s Liang troops arrived too; Xiangzhou was pacified. Qi was made prefect of Fuzhou, then moved through Bozhou and Anzhou.

莊宗滅梁，玘來朝，莊宗勞之曰：「劉侯亡恙，爾居晉陽之南鄙久矣，不早相聞，今日見訪，不其晚邪？」 When Zhuangzong destroyed Liang, Qi came to court. Zhuangzong greeted him: “Lord Liu, are you well? You have long held the southern marches beyond Taiyuan. Why no word until now? To call only today—is that not late?”

玘頓首謝罪，遣還鎮，遂以為節度使，徙鎮安遠。 Qi kowtowed and begged pardon; Zhuangzong sent him back, then made him military governor and moved him to Anyuan.

天成元年，以史敬鎔代之，玘還京師，未至，拜武勝軍節度使，以疾卒于道中，贈侍中。 In Tiancheng year 1, Shi Jingrong replaced him. Qi headed for the capital; before he arrived they made him military governor of Wusheng, but he died of illness on the road and was posthumously made Palace Attendant.
