后主践阼，为步兵校尉，代王连领丞相长史。 When Liu Shan took the throne, Xiang Lang became colonel of foot soldiers and succeeded Wang Lian as chief clerk to the chancellor.

諸葛亮當北行，表與後主曰：「將軍向寵，性行淑均，曉暢軍事，試用於昔，先帝稱之曰能，是以眾論舉寵為督。 When Zhuge Liang was about to march north, he memorialized the emperor: "General Xiang Chong is even-tempered and fair, and well versed in military affairs. The late emperor tested him in earlier days and praised his ability, and the court therefore recommended him as camp supervisor.

充闻之曰：“吾闻谯周之言，先帝讳备，其训具也，后主讳禅，其训授也，如言刘已具矣，当授与人也。 Xiang Chong said: "I have heard Qiao Zhou's remark—the Former Lord's taboo name Bei means 'complete,' and the Later Lord's taboo name Shan means 'hand over,' as though the Liu house were finished and due to be handed on.
