初，和帝崩，鄧太后以皇子勝有痼疾，不可奉承宗廟，貪殤帝孩抱，養為己子，故立之，以勝為平原王。 When Emperor He died, Empress Dowager Deng held that Prince Sheng had a chronic illness and could not attend the ancestral temple; she seized the infant Emperor Shang, raised him as her own, enthroned him, and made Sheng King of Pingyuan.

及殤帝崩，群臣以勝疾非痼、意咸歸之，太后以前既不立，恐後為怨，乃立和帝兄清河孝王子祐，是為安帝。 When Emperor Shang died, ministers held that Sheng's illness was not chronic and hearts turned to him; fearing later resentment for not having enthroned him earlier, the empress dowager enthroned Liu You, son of King Xiao of Qinghe and brother of Emperor He—Emperor An.

章以眾心不附，遂密謀閉宮門，誅車騎將軍鄧騭兄弟及鄭眾、蔡倫，劫尚書，廢太后於南宮，封帝為遠國王，而立平原王勝。 Zhou Zhang, finding popular hearts unattached, secretly plotted to shut the palace gates, execute Deng Zhi and his brothers along with Zheng Zhong and Cai Lun, seize the Masters of Writing, depose the empress dowager in the Southern Palace, banish the emperor to a distant kingdom, and enthrone Prince Sheng of Pingyuan.
