以外委隸同族劉騰鴻湘後營，轉戰湖北。 He entered service as an externe corporal under his kinsman Liu Tenghong in the Xiang Rear Battalion and fought through Hubei.

咸豐六年，從騰鴻援江西，戰瑞州，騰鴻中砲殞，連捷率所部攻城，拔之。 In the sixth year of Xianfeng he marched with Tenghong into Jiangxi and fought at Ruizhou; when Tenghong was killed by cannon fire, Lianjie led his troops in storming the city and took it.
