器量尤廣，庚子，外人請懲禍首戮大臣，編修劉廷琛謂失國體，責宰輔不能爭，家鼐揖而引過。 His breadth of character was especially remarkable. In the gengzi year foreigners demanded that those responsible be punished and senior ministers executed. Compiler Liu Tingchen said this would disgrace the state and blamed the chief ministers for failing to object. Jianai bowed and took the blame upon himself.

家鼐獨保廷琛，謂曩以大義見責，知忠鯁必不負國，世皆稱之。 Jianai alone recommended Tingchen, saying that because he had once been rebuked for upholding a great principle, one could know that as a loyal and forthright man he would not fail the state. The world praised him for it.
