啟泰自度不能守，語妻劉曰：「義不偷生，忠不附賊，死吾事也。 Seeing he could not hold the city, Qitai told his wife Liu: 'Righteousness forbids living in disgrace; loyalty forbids joining rebels. Death is my duty.

劉請殉，家人皆原從死。 Liu asked to die with him, and the whole household wished to follow.

乃以巨盎置酒下藥，劉及侍妾婢僕飲者二十一人。 They set out a great basin of wine laced with poison. Liu and the serving women and maids who drank numbered twenty-one.
