咸豐初，應募為鄉勇，從黎平知府胡林翼剿新寧竄匪，又剿黃平榔匪，擒匪首劉瞎麼，以功獎外委。 Early in Xianfeng he joined the local militia, followed Prefect Hu Linyi of Liping against bandits driven into Xinning, then against the Lang bandits of Huangping, capturing their leader Liu Xiamo and earning the rank of externe corporal.
