始笄，家貧，事姑孝謹。 When she came of age the family was poor; she served her mother-in-law with filial devotion.

姑疾篤不能去，侯號泣姑側。 Her mother-in-law was gravely ill and could not flee; Hou wept at her side.

後夫與姑俱亡，子幼，父母欲更嫁之，侯曰：“兒以賤婦人，得歸隱居賢者之門已幸矣，忍去而使謝氏無後乎？ Later her husband and mother-in-law both died, leaving a young son; her parents wished to remarry her. Hou said: 'I, a lowly woman, was fortunate to marry into the household of a worthy recluse—how could I leave and leave the Xie clan without posterity?
