其長史慕容紹宗諫曰：「不可，今四方擾擾，人懷異望，況高公雄略，又握大兵，將不可為。」 His chief secretary Murong Shaozong warned, "You cannot do this. The realm is in turmoil and men turn their hopes elsewhere; Gao Huan is ambitious and now commands a great army—this cannot stand."

紹宗曰：「親兄弟尚爾難信，何論香火！」 Shaozong replied, "Full brothers cannot trust each other—what use is a sworn oath?"

時兆左右已受神武金，因譖紹宗與神武舊有隙，兆乃禁紹宗而催神武發。 By then Zhao's attendants had taken Gao Huan's gold and accused Shaozong of an old feud with Gao Huan; Zhao imprisoned Shaozong and pressed Gao Huan to march.

兆聞，乃釋紹宗而問焉。 When Erzhu Zhao heard, he released Shaozong and asked his meaning.

紹宗曰：「猶掌握中物也。」 Shaozong said, "It is still something clasped in your palm."

尒朱兆對慕容紹宗叩心曰：「不用公言，以至於此！」 Erzhu Zhao clutched his chest before Murong Shaozong and cried, "Had I listened to you, this would never have happened!"

紹宗反旗鳴角，收聚散卒，成軍容而西上。 Shaozong reversed the banners and sounded the horns, rallied the scattered troops, restored order, and marched west.

慕容紹宗以尒朱榮妻子及餘衆自保烏突城，降，神武以義故，待之甚厚。 Murong Shaozong held Wutu City with Erzhu Rong's family and the remnants; he surrendered, and for old righteousness's sake Gao Huan treated him with great generosity.

岳總帥諸軍南討，與行臺慕容紹宗等擊明，大破之，臨陣擒明及其大將胡貴孫，自餘俘馘數萬。 Yue led the armies south; with field headquarters Murong Shaozong and others he attacked Ming, routed him completely, captured Ming and his great general Hu Guisun on the field, and took tens of thousands more captive.

Suddenly a violent wind rose from the northeast; at high noon the sky went dark, sand flew and stones scoured the air, the mooring lines snapped, and the boat was driven to the foot of the city.

釋褐開府參軍，兼行臺郎中，隨慕容紹宗。 He doffed the hemp and entered service as an opening-office staff officer and concurrent mobile-office gentleman, attending Murong Shaozong.

紹宗自云有水厄，遂於戰艦中浴，並自投於水，冀以厭當之。 Shaozong claimed a water bane was upon him, so he bathed aboard the war galley and even threw himself into the river, hoping an apotropaic counter-measure would turn fate aside.

紹宗笑曰：「不能免俗，聊復爾耳。」 Murong Shaozong laughed. "Cannot escape the vulgar," he said; "one goes through the motions, that is all."

未幾而紹宗遇溺，時論以為知微。 Before long Murong Shaozong drowned; opinion at the time took it that Bao had read the omen.
