章從太守行春到冠軍，太守猶欲謁之。 Zhou Zhang accompanied the governor on a spring inspection tour to Guanjun; the governor still meant to call on Dou Xian.

章進諫曰：『今日公行春，豈可越儀私交。 Zhou Zhang remonstrated: "Today you are on the spring circuit—how can you overstep protocol for a private visit?

明府剖符大臣，千里重任，舉止進退，其可輕乎？』 You are a minister bearing the imperial tally, charged with a thousand li—can your comings and goings be treated lightly?"

太守不聽，遂便升車。 The governor would not listen and mounted his carriage.

章前拔佩刀絕馬鞅，於是乃止。 Zhou Zhang stepped forward, drew his sword, and cut the horse's traces—only then did the governor stop.

及憲被誅，公卿以下多以交關得罪，太守幸免，以此重章。 When Dou Xian was executed, grandees and officials were punished for association; the governor escaped by luck and thereafter held Zhou Zhang in high esteem.
