自裴延齡用事，益為天子積私財，而生民重困。 Under Pei Yanling the emperor's private hoard grew and the people suffered doubly.

時杜黃裳遭奄人讒詆，穆贊、韋武、李宣、盧雲等為裴延齡構擯，勢危甚，憬救護申解，皆得免。 At the time Du Huangshang was slandered by eunuchs, and Mu Zan, Wei Wu, Li Xuan, Lu Yun, and others were framed and driven out by Pei Yanling until their situation was dire. Jing intervened on their behalf and secured their release.

初，贄約共執退延齡，既對，贄極言其奸，帝色變，憬不為助，遂罷贄，乃始當國。 At first Zhi and Jing had agreed to join forces to remove Yanling. When they faced the throne, Zhi denounced Yanling's treachery at length until the emperor's face changed, but Jing offered no support. Zhi was dismissed, and only then did Jing take control of the government.

方裴延齡用事，中傷俊良，建白無不當帝意。 At that time Pei Yanling was in power, slandering worthy men; whatever proposals he made invariably suited the emperor's wishes.

薦將疏其惡，延齡知之，因言於帝曰：「諫議論朝政得失，史官書人君善惡，二者不可兼。」 Jian was about to memorialize denouncing his wickedness; Yanling learned of it and therefore said to the emperor, "A remonstrating censor discusses the gains and losses of court governance, while the historiographer records the ruler's good and evil—one person cannot hold both offices."

延齡必欲以罪斥廢之。 Yanling was determined to find some offense by which to dismiss and banish him.

會遣使冊回鶻毗伽懷信可汗，使薦至回鶻。 When an envoy was sent to invest Bilge Huai Trust Khan of the Uyghurs, Yanling had Jian sent to the Uyghurs.

德宗欲相裴延齡，與陽城交章言不可。 When Dezong wished to make Pei Yanling chief minister, he and Yang Cheng submitted linked memorials opposing it.

及裴延齡誣逐陸贄、張滂、李充等，帝怒甚，無敢言。 When Pei Yanling falsely drove out Lu Zan, Zhang Pang, Li Chong, and others, the emperor was furious beyond measure and none dared speak.

乃約拾遺王仲舒守延英閣上疏極論延齡罪，慷慨引誼，申直贄等，累日不止。 He then joined reminder Wang Zhongshu in guarding the Yanying Pavilion to submit a memorial fiercely denouncing Yanling's crimes, speaking with passionate righteousness and defending Zan and the others, for days without cease.

然帝意不已，欲遂相延齡。 Yet the emperor's intent was not finished; he still wished to make Yanling chief minister.

城顯語曰：「延齡為相，吾當取白麻壞之，哭於廷。」 Cheng said openly: "If Yanling becomes chief minister, I shall seize the white hemp edict of appointment, tear it, and weep in the court."

帝不相延齡，城力也。 The emperor did not make Yanling chief minister—Cheng's force accomplished it.
