Old Book of Tang, Chapter 27Volume 23 Treatises 3: Rites 3 · 2 passages
Xuanzong again composed a personal reply: "There are six kinds of derivative mourning, and this is one of them. As for the rules of lowering and reducing, the ritual has no clear text. These all proceed from oneself in leading kin and are used to make mourning dress. What is preserved and restrained is entirely a pushing outward of grace. My feeling is not settled, and therefore I ordered detailed deliberation; I did not wish merely to seek alteration of antiquity in order to show difference. You and the others consider that 'for kin of the external clan, ritual has no suppressing reduction, and the reciprocal mourning system is drawn from very distant cases.' But maternal aunts and uncles belong to the closest of derivative kin. Speaking by kinship, they also match paternal aunts and uncles. How could the examples cited be distant, while the mourning for close kin is reduced? Also, a wife follows her husband. Since the husband has mourning for his maternal aunts and uncles, she wears mourning by following her husband, and in this way kinship is harmonized. I truly wish to make the unworthy reach upward and the worthy bend downward. You and the others should examine this thoroughly." Yaoqing and the others memorialized: "Your Majesty embodies utmost benevolence and extends the Way of grace broadly, intending to enlarge drawing-in and show harmony among kin; you have again issued virtuous words and again ordered detailed deliberation.
