傳言秦始皇遣方士徐福將童男女數千人入海，求蓬莱神仙不得，徐福畏誅不敢還，遂止此洲，世世相承，有數萬家。 Tradition says Qin Shi Huang sent the fangshi Xu Fu with several thousand boys and girls to sea in search of the Penglai immortals; failing, Xu Fu feared execution, dared not return, and settled on this island, where successive generations came to number tens of thousands of households.
