唐中和三年，蔡州秦宗權遣孫儒、劉建峰將兵萬人屬其弟宗衡，略地淮南，殷初為儒裨將。 In the third year of the Zhonghe reign (883), Qin Zongquan of Caizhou dispatched Sun Ru and Liu Jianfeng with ten thousand men under his younger brother Zongheng to seize territory in Huainan, and Yin began as a junior officer under Sun Ru.

宗衡等攻楊行密於揚州，未克，梁兵方急攻宗權，宗權數召儒等，儒不欲還，宗衡屢趨之，儒怒，殺宗衡，自將其兵取高郵，遂逐行密。 Zongheng and his forces besieged Yang Xingmi at Yangzhou without success. While Liang armies were tightening their assault on Zongquan, he kept calling Sun Ru back, but Ru refused to return. When Zongheng pressed him repeatedly, Ru in a rage killed Zongheng, took command of the troops himself, captured Gaoyou, and drove Yang Xingmi away.
