太安中，石冰作亂，吳興太守顧秘為義軍都督，與周玘等起兵討之，秘檄洪為將兵都尉，攻冰別率，破之，遷伏波將軍。 During Taian, Shi Bing rebelled. Gu Mi, grand administrator of Wuxing, became commander of a loyalist army and with Zhou Qi and others raised troops against him. Gu Mi's proclamation made Ge Hong commandant of troops; Hong attacked Shi Bing's detached force, defeated it, and was promoted to General Who Calms the Waves.

冰平，洪不論功賞，徑至洛陽，欲搜求異書以廣其學。 After victory Ge Hong spurned rewards and hurried to Luoyang hunting rare books.
