古之知孝者莫如舜，知義者莫如孔、孟，其於君臣父子之際詳矣，使其不幸而遭焉，其亦如是而已矣！ In antiquity none knew filial piety like Shun, none knew righteousness like Confucius and Mencius—they weighed every bond between lord and subject, father and son; had fate forced such a choice on them, they would have done no differently!
