Thereupon Grand Guardian Wei Guan's son Ting, Director of Works Tai's son Lue, Grand Mentor to the Crown Prince Yang Ji's son Bi, Junior Tutor to the Crown Prince Pei Kai's son Xian, Junior Mentor to the Crown Prince Zhang Hua's son Yi, and Minister Director Hua Gao's son Heng were assigned to keep company with the crown prince and assist in his guidance.
Thereupon Minister He Yu was dispatched with insignia, with Xie Jie as deputy, together with General-in-Chief Sima Rong, Prince of Liang; Eastern Garrison General Sima Yun, Prince of Huainan; Forward General Sima Dan, Duke of Dongwu; Sima Lun, Prince of Zhao; and Grand Guardian He Shao. They went to the Eastern Palace to depose the crown prince as a commoner.
Right Guard Commandant Sima Ya, a distant kinsman of the imperial house, and Attendant Commandant Xu Chao, both favorites of the crown prince, grieved deeply; they told Sun Xiu, stratagemist to Lun, Prince of Zhao: "The state has no true heir—altar and grain will be imperiled; great ministers' disaster is sure to rise.
When the new ruler ascended the imperial throne and the prince guarded the succession in the Eastern Palace, he neglected the four teachings and sometimes omitted the three daily greetings. His leopard’s form was not yet transformed, while his phoenix virtue had already declined. He trusted wicked deceivers and drove away upright men, enjoyed the lowly work of butchering and selling wine, and indulged in idle outings in the parks. Truly one may say: "All have a beginning, but few carry through to the end."
