永既素重衍，為且受使得自置偏裨，乃以衍為立漢將軍，領狼孟長，屯太原，與上党太守田邑等繕甲養士，扞衛並土。 Bao Yong, who already respected Feng Yan, let him name subordinates and made him General Who Establishes Han and magistrate of Langmeng, camped at Taiyuan with Tian Yi of Shangdang to arm the border.

及世祖即位，遣宗正劉延攻天井關，與田邑連戰十餘合，延不得進。 When Emperor Guangwu took the throne, he sent Liu Yan, director of the imperial clan, to attack Tianjing Pass; after more than ten clashes with Tian Yi, Yan could not break through.

邑迎母弟妻子，為延所獲。 Tian Yi's mother, younger brother, wife, and children, whom he went out to receive, were captured by Liu Yan.

後邑聞更始敗，乃遣使詣洛陽獻璧馬，即拜為上黨太守。 When Tian Yi learned Gengshi had fallen, he sent envoys to Luoyang with jade disks and horses and was appointed grand administrator of Shangdang.

因遣使者招永、衍，永、衍等疑不肯降，而忿邑背前約，衍乃遺邑書曰：蓋聞晉文出奔而子犯宣其忠，趙武逢難而程嬰明其賢，二子之義當矣。 He then sent envoys to summon Bao Yong and Feng Yan; they hesitated and refused to submit, and resenting Tian Yi for breaking their earlier pact, Feng Yan wrote to him: "When Duke Wen of Jin fled into exile, Zi Fan showed his loyalty; when Duke Wu of Zhao met disaster, Cheng Ying proved his worth—both acted as righteousness required."

伯玉擢選剖符，專宰大郡。 You, Boyu, were elevated, granted a tally, and entrusted with a great commandery.

為伯玉深計，莫若與鮑尚書同情戮力，顯忠貞之節，立超世之功。 For Tian Yi's good, join Bao Yong in one loyal effort and win a fame beyond your time.

若乃貪上党之權，惜全邦之實，衍恐伯玉必懷周趙之憂，上黨複有前年之禍。 Cling to Shangdang's power and the whole commandery's wealth, and I fear you court the fate of Zhou and Zhao and repeat last year's calamity.

以為伯玉聞此至言，必若刺心，自非嬰城而堅守，則策馬而不顧也。 When Tian Yi hears this straight talk it should pierce his heart—either bolt the gates or gallop away without a backward glance.

邑報書曰： Tian Yi answered in writing:

間者，老母諸弟見執于軍，而邑安然不顧者，豈非重其節乎？ When my mother and brothers were taken I held still—was that not because I weighed honor heavier?

邑親潰敵圍，拒擊宗正，自試智勇，非不能當。 I myself broke their lines and drove back the imperial clansman—rest assured I could fight.

邑雖沒身，能如命何？ Though I die for it, what quarrel have I with fate?

邑年三十，曆位卿士，性少嗜欲，情厭事為。 I am thirty, risen to high office, sick of intrigue, scant of appetite for power.

欲搖太山而蕩北海，事敗身危，要思邑言。 You would move Taishan and stir the northern sea—when the plot breaks and your life hangs by a thread, remember what Tian Yi told you.

永遣弟升及子媚張舒誘降涅城，舒家在上黨，邑悉系之。 Bao Yong sent his brother Sheng and son Bao Mei with Zhang Shu to win Nie by defection; Zhang Shu's kin lived in Shangdang, and Tian Yi arrested every one of them.

邑字伯玉，馮翊人也，後為漁陽太守。 Tian Yi, styled Boyu, was from Fengyi and later served as grand administrator of Yuyang.
