并州劉崇南侵，命通副河中王彥超出晉州道擊之，敗於高平。 When Liu Chong of Bingzhou marched south, Tong was sent under Wang Yanchao of Hezhong to intercept him by way of Jinzhou; they defeated him at Gaoping.

顯德二年，命通與王彥超浚治之，功未就，契丹至，通出兵迎擊退之，遂城李晏口為靜安軍，四旬而完。 In Xiande 2 he ordered Tong and Wang Yanchao to dredge and repair the river. Before the work was finished the Khitan arrived; Tong led troops out, beat them back, then walled Li Yankou as Jing'an Army and finished in forty days.
