咸平二年，河西黃女族長蒙異保及惟昌所部啜訛引趙保吉之眾入寇麟州萬戶谷，進至松花砦，惟昌與從叔同巡檢使海超、弟供奉官惟信率兵赴戰。 In 999, Meng Yibao, chief of the Hexi Huangnu tribe, and Chuo'e of Weichang's command led Zhao Baoji's men to raid Wanhugu in Linzhou and advanced to Songhua Fort. Weichang marched out with his uncle and inspection commissioner Hai Chao and his younger brother, palace attendant Weixin.

會保吉兵眾，官軍不敵，惟昌臂中流矢墜馬，攝弓起，得裨將馬突圍出，海超、惟信沒焉。 Baoji's force was too large for the government troops. Weichang took an arrow in the arm, fell from his horse, seized his bow, mounted a subordinate's horse, and broke out; Hai Chao and Weixin were killed.

惟忠，字藎臣，初以兄惟信戰沒，補西頭供奉官，擢閣門祗候。 Weizhong, courtesy name Jinchen, entered service as a western-head palace attendant after his elder brother Weixin was killed in battle and was promoted to gate usher.
