合達隸其經略使烏林答乞住，乞住以便宜授軍中都統，累遷提控，佩金符。 Heda served under frontier commissioner Wulind Qizhu, who by emergency authority made him a military commandant in the army; he rose through successive promotions to army controller and was awarded the gold tally.

未幾，會燕南諸帥將兵複中都城，行至平州遷安縣，臨潢、全慶兩軍變，殺乞住，擁合達還平州，推為帥，統乞住軍。 Soon afterward the southern Yan commanders mustered troops to retake the Central Capital; when they reached Qian'an County in Pingzhou, the Linhuang and Quan-Qing forces mutinied, killed Qizhu, brought Heda back to Pingzhou, and made him commander over Qizhu's former army.
