尋命往兩湖按訊湖北按察使周季堂及湖南學政徐松，季堂無貪跡，惟袒庇屬員，褫職，免治罪； Soon he was sent to the two Hu to investigate Hubei Surveillance Commissioner Zhou Jitang and Hunan Education Commissioner Xu Song. Jitang showed no greed but sheltered his subordinates; he was stripped of office but not punished.

湖南學政徐松矜愎失士心，欲附慎畛自固，常列其弟子優等，慎畛列款糾劾罷之。 The Hunan educational commissioner Xu Song was arrogant and had lost the regard of the scholarly community; hoping to secure himself by currying favor with Shenzhen, he habitually ranked Shenzhen's pupils in the top grade. Shenzhen set out the facts in a memorial of impeachment and had him removed from office.
