初，同光中，符習為青州節度使，宦官楊希望為監軍，專製軍政。 In Tongguang Fu Xi had held Qing while eunuch Yang Xiwang as monitor controlled the army.

希望遣兵邀之，習懼而還。 Yang Xiwang sent troops to cut him off; Fu Xi retreated in fear.

希望聞魏軍亂，遣兵圍守習家，欲盡殺之。 Hearing of the Wei mutiny, Yang Xiwang besieged Fu Xi's family to kill them all.

公儼素受希望獎愛，謂希望曰：「內侍宜分腹心之兵，監四面守陴者，則誰敢異圖。」 Gongyan, favored by Yang Xiwang, said to him, "Your Grace should divide your trusted troops to watch all four sides of the ramparts—then who would dare plot differently."

希望從之。 Yang Xiwang agreed.

公儼乘其無備，圍希望之第，擒而殺之。 Gongyan surprised him, surrounded his house, seized Yang Xiwang, and killed him.

平盧監軍楊希望聞習為明宗所召，乃以兵圍習家屬，將殺之。 Yang Xiwang, the Pinglu army monitor, heard Xi had gone over to Mingzong. He surrounded Xi’s family with troops and meant to kill them.

指揮使王公儼素為希望所信，紿希望曰：「內侍盡忠朝廷，誅反者家族，孰敢不效命！ Wang Gongyan, a commander Xiwang trusted, tricked him: “You serve the throne faithfully by destroying a rebel’s kin—who would not follow you?

希望信之，乃悉分其兵守城，公儼因擒希望斬之，習家屬由是獲免。 Xiwang believed him and sent his men to the walls. Gongyan seized him and cut off his head. Xi’s family was spared.
