世宗命充軍機處章京。 The Yongzheng Emperor appointed him a clerk in the Grand Council.

鄂爾泰承旨固辭，上曰：「鄂容安與張廷玉子若靄，皇考命在軍機處行走，本欲造就成材。 Ortai tried to decline the appointment, but the emperor said: "E Rong'an and Zhang Tingyu's son Ruohai, as my late father ordered to serve in the Grand Council, were originally meant to be trained into capable officials.
